Must-Watch TV: The Profit on CNBC

Listen up, folks. Marcus Lamonis is the prophet on The Profit. If you can get over the pun and the constant tweets on re-runs, this is must-watch TV.

What is it? Well, imagine a Shark with a heart from ABC's Shark Tank out in the wild stalking prey. He finds struggling small businesses. Assesses them. And makes an offer. Then, the madness begins.

One small business owner insulted a nine-year-old girl. Another refused to trade down her new BMW while her employees helped pay for inventory out of their own pockets. And the popcorn people - oh my - lied, cheated, and tried to steal the Prophet's ideas.

Watch it. Here's a sampling.

Why We've Converted to Juicing

One evening when the hubs and I had nothing better to do we watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead on Netflix (movie trailer below). This journey of an overweight Australian who goes on a 60 day juice cleanse is intriguing. From fat to fit, his transformation is pretty awesome. Next we watched The Gerson Miracle about the effect a juicing diet can have on cancer. Is juicing really the miracle non-drug? Some say it is.

Chase and I aren't overweight, we don't suffer from regular migraines, but I am convinced there is something to adopting juicing into your daily diet that can provide huge health benefits (even if you're not trying to cure cancer). The extreme form of juicing that is shown in these documentaries isn't for everyone, but who couldn't use more vegetables? Americans consume far too many carbs, fatty snacks, and sugars in our grab and go lifestyle.

Well, we now own a juicer. Stay tuned for more juicing experiences, recipes, and benefits.

Louie Season 4. Watch It.

Louie Season 4 on FX
Yes, you should watch season 4 of Louie. Comedy doesn't always have to be funny. That's right, Louis CK has made his miserable life so relatable that it's comical. It's not jump-out-of-your-chair or slap-your-spouse-in-the-face funny. It's sad. It's dark. It's real.

Here are a few of my favorite scenes so far:
  • Louie loses his mind and publicly berates his daughter for intentionally stepping off the 6-train
  • Louie has an internal struggle with an overweight woman that makes him laugh
  • The local news reports that LeBron James died in a hurricane ... along with 5 million other people
Louis CK, season 3 was a let down, and I was disappointed that I had to wait over a year for season 4, but it was worth it. Well done.

What to watch?

Mulling over what to watch? Let us give a few suggestions. Here's a list of shows to add to your Netflix queue (or Amazon Prime Instant Video, or any other video service out there).

VICE. TV news series on HBO. Like 60 minutes? This is kind of like that, but on steroids. Unbelievable news stories from around the world. VICE was the only TV crew allowed to enter North Korea to film Dennis Rodman on his trip there. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. A-typical newscasters add a young, hipster vibe to reporting and narrowly escape dangerous situations. Personal note: Season 2 just started. Real eye-opening stuff here.
Blackfish. Documentary film. Tillikum, a Sea World performing orca whale, has killed three individuals during his captivity. These deaths have prompted ongoing court cases between Sea World and OSHA. Trainer interviews and video footage provide a compelling case for removing killer whales from captivity. Personal note: I won't ever go back to Sea World. I didn't enjoy it the first time anyway.
The Newsroom. TV series on HBO. Fictional political drama based on actual news events. The show chronicles behind the scene events of the TV network ACN. Will McAvoy, the head news anchor, and his staff face ethical challenges with their own life conundrums in the mix. Personal note: This show is favorite of mine. Who knew Jeff Daniels had this in him? After seeing Dumb and Dumber I wouldn't have thought so. Fantastic cast. Produced by Aaron Sorkin of The West Wing.
Shameless. TV series on Showtime. A Chicago family learns how to survive not-so-everyday life with(out) their drunk father, Frank Gallagher, who's a low-life, spend every dime they have, kind of guy. Fiona, the oldest of the six siblings, leads the pack in the unruly adventures of this poverty stricken family. Personal note: This show isn't for everyone. Nudity. Violence. Drugs. Not exactly uplifting stuff, but holy moly it's a wild, entertaining ride.

Do you have any show suggestions for us? Report in the comments below to let us know your favorites.

The Bachelor Update 1

The Bachelor. So much bad drama you just can't pass it up. Can you say Juan-uary?! This season so far ... <3 Juany Pabs. He's possibly the least boring bachelor to date. What do we love about him? 1. His accent. 2. His dancing skillz. 3. You thought I was going to say his abs, didn't you? Psh. Whatever. His pecs. And he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Juan Pablo
Episodes 1 and 2 so far you've missed a bunch of girls getting out of limos and one crazy drunk girl making a fool of herself. In other words, not much. My favorite girls as of week 2 are:

Renee
1. Renee, the 32 year old mom. Let's hear it for the oldER girls!
2. Andi, the Assistant District Attorney. I was glad she at least had *some* reservations about going nude in the photo shoot.
3. Sharleen, she got the first impression rose. Opera singer. She seems intelligent.

Least favorite:

Dog Lover
1. Kelly, the DOG LOVER. Yeah, that's what is listed as her occupation. What a FREAKING joke. Like, seriously.
2. Cassandra, the former NBA dancer/mom. She's a fakey-fake only trying to get more celebrity status because the father of her child is Rodney Stuckey.
3. Christy. I don't know why, she just bugs.

Who are your faves and least faves? Inquiring minds want to know!

BOOK REVIEW: Orange is the New Black

lifestyle and review blog
Piper KermanMuch fanfare has been made about new, original content on Netflix, like Orange is the New Black, for example. Call it new and original if you like, but Orange is the New Black is based on the true story of Piper Kerman's yearlong sentence in prison.

Regardless of whether or not her short time of petty crime should be celebrated with a TV series, Kerman's book looks inside America's prison system -- and boy, is it bad ... not the good bad, either. Prison should be uncomfortable, yes, but why not also use it to help people? According to Kerman, the US prison population has more than quadrupled in the last 30 years, a trend unlikely to change anytime soon.

Kerman survived prison, in fact, she thrived in prison. Her positive outlook and willingness to help others helped her make friends. Prison helped her discover something she thought she would never find: her identity. Orange is the New Black is a good read: B+

Why You Should Watch MTV's Teen Wolf

Review and lifestyle blog
Attention adults, it's OK to watch MTV. It's even OK to admit that you enjoy it. Yes, Miley twerked her way into infamy during the Video Music Awards. And yes, Jersey Shore was a complete waste of time. And absolutley yes, there is at least one fantastic, adolescent program worth watching: Teen Wolf.

The story line isn't fantastic. The acting isn't great. The special effects leave you shaking your head.
Werewolf
The high-school drama is often annoying. So why should you watch? I can give you at least five excellent reasons:
  1. It feels more mature than Twilight (for real, click on this link and puke with me)
  2. It will annoy your rational, no-fun spouse
  3. It will fill your need for the Supernatural
  4. There's nothing better to watch on Monday nights (returns January 6th)
  5. It makes you feel young and silly again
BONUS REASONS SIX AND SEVEN: My favorite character, Stiles, doesn't even have any supernatural powers. Oh, and The Teen Wolf mysteries are not easy to solve ... seriously, I'm not joking. More importantly, I am not ashamed to admit that I watch Teen Wolf, and I love it. ROAR!

The Best Villain on TV

Review Blog Lifestyle
Let's get one thing straight, the meanest villain currently on TV is Breaking Bad's Walter White (Bryan Cranston). Walt makes for a good villain, but he's no longer likeable. For several seasons, his cancer left a small place for sympathy in the viewer's heart.  No more. Walt is an evil man, willing to murder man, woman, or child to avoid the law, but he's not the best villain, not even close.

Who is? For that, we turn to a new series on Showtime: Ray Donovan. Jon Voight's character, Mickey Donovan, is both disgusting and charismatic. Matter of fact, forget about antagonists, he's more charming than any protagonist on TV. Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber), a man with moral ambiguity only comparable to the likes of Breaking Bad characters, wants to murder his father, Mickey. Micky, by the way, after recently being released from prison, with good intentions, tried to kill the priest that molested his son. Only, he killed the wrong man -- but we love him for it.

Breaking Bad is coming to an end, and Walter White is leaving us, and just in time. We don't like him anymore. Goodbye, adios, so long, Walt. But what's life without someone to hate, well, in a loving way? Mickey Donovan is just the right man for the job, or at least until Frank Gallagher returns in another Showtime hit, Shameless.

WARNING: As with most of Showtime's programs, Ray Donovan is not suitable for children raised outside the hood.
