Instagram Inspiration

I've got a thing for following designers and businesses on Instagram that post awesome pics of apparel, projects, home decor, and just fun stuff. What can I say? Pretty things make me happy. Here are some favorites in my Instagram feed right now!

1. Brickyard Buffalo.
This company is a pop-up online market that showcases fun, unique items from clothing, to jewelry, to kids stuff, to home items. I love the variety! They only have a few items available for purchase at a time, and the sale goes until the item is sold out or until the clock runs out. #greatbusinessidea

2. Studio DIY.
This is basically a party planning website/blog with tons of cool, crafty projects. The colors and ideas are kind of amazing. She makes it seem so easy to DIY! On the home page today -- Funfetti Creamsicles. I DIE!

3. Vintage Revivals.
I love home decorating. I just wish I was better at it. I follow a few different home design Instas, but this one is unique, and super witty. Her latest post totally made me LOL. Really, out loud. I love seeing how crazy, old, 70's looking finishes can turn a place into a modern space. Such a fun blog. But more importantly, fun to see the pics on Instagram!

80's Workout Playlist

If I don't have music playing, my runs aren't likely to last long. I need a distraction to keep myself going so my body doesn't realize I'm trying to whip it, whip it good. Playlists on my iPod are plentiful, but one of my favorites is "80's ADD". Try it out for size. Take it for a stroll around the block in your leotard, leg warmers, and sweatbands. A few tips before downloading the music: 1) Look for the shortest version of the song. 2) A remix might be nice to change things up. 3) Listen to it before you purchase.

Where to Report your Car Problems

I own a 2009 Toyota Corolla. If you listen to the news you know the issues Toyota has had with the "sticky pedal" and a myriad of other give-me-heartburn-because-I-might-die problems. I won't bore you with the details of my vehicle woes, but I will tell you my car has been at the dealership's service department 3 times in the past month for them to fix the same safety problem that cost me $900 to start with. Annoying? To say the least.
I've done a lot of Google searches to see if I'm the only one with this mysterious problem and I'm not. I happened upon this website that may help get recalls discovered faster.

I filed a safety complaint about my vehicle (along with 791 other complaints about my car) in hopes that this specific problem will be resolved by recall with the help of the US Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Office of Defects Investigation (ODI). If you are having safety issues with your car, child seat, or tires complete the information form on this website! Spread the word.

Send A Card.

I happened upon the website Treat.com. It's owned by Shutterfly, the digital photobook website. Treat's concept isn't brand new, but it's got unique aspects to it. Treat is a personalized greeting card website. Pick a template for a birthday, holiday, or congrats card and add personal photos, messages, or gift cards and send it to your friend or family member.
As someone who sends cards regularly this is a dream come true and I wish I would have come up with the idea myself. You can purchase a package for better deals on cards, the best being 24 paper cards for $1.99 each, with each card shipped for free and an additional 24 digital cards. By creating a profile you can start and save cards, and set the delivery date for the future. This way you never forget an occasion. Seriously? It's pretty much genius. #sold

Ten Things To Do Online When You're Really Bored

Are you bored at home? Work? Here's a list of ten things to do online when you're really, really bored:

1. Visit http://www.news.google.com and read up on world news or news near you
2. Go to Amazon.com and search for toilet paper. Read the customer reviews
3. Check out GrooveShark. It's sort of like Pandora, but better
4. Subscribe to Netflix. Then, watch House of Cards and Blackfish
5. Delete your Facebook profile. Grow up
6. Read through the trending topics on Twitter
7. Start a blog
8. Search "Top Ten Lists." Avoid David Letterman's crap. You're welcome.
9. Do an image search for friends, family, and exes (shh - don't tell your spouse)
10. Pay your bills. Check your financial accounts

And remember, "Think before you click!"

Honorable mention: YouTube, Pinterest, Craigslist, Grantland, Deadspin, many many more

Selling tips for Craigslist

Craigslist is my homeboy. I've sold cars (two of them), Stampin' Up! stamps, fake trees, Ikea tables, microwaves, couches, beds, home decor, and the list keeps growing! The only thing I haven't tried: clothes. We use eBay for that one. The greatest part: list your stuff for free! Here are some selling tips for Craigslist.
1. Price the items slightly high, but fair.
Peeps on CL are looking for a deal, and everyone swindles. By setting the price a little higher, you'll probably end up making what you expected initially. Compare what you're selling to similar items already listed. That will give you a good idea of an acceptable price.

2. Photos are a must. Minimum of 3.
I won't even look at a posting without pictures. It's worth the extra time. Freshen them up in Photoshop if you need to. Don't post bad photos.

3. Include links to your items selling other places.
We just listed my old TV for $300, but found it on Overstock.com for $850 -- yes, I am going to put the link on there to show the buyer what a great deal mine is!

4. Double and triple list.
Let's say I'm selling a couch. This can fit under multiple categories: furniture, general for sale, household, and maybe a few others. List items in all categories that are applicable.

5. Package deals.
Do you have a whole bedroom set? Put it in one post, and do another for each item in the set you are trying to sell. Have a toaster, microwave, and blender? Group them together! Sometimes this will help move the items a little quicker. And maybe the buyer didn't realize they wanted that blender, too.

6. Renew your postings.
Each ad appears in the order it was submitted. If it's a popular category, that chair you posted 30 minutes ago is already 20-30 ads down the page. People will scroll, but not too far. After 48 hours you can renew your post so it appears at the top of the page again. This is a MUST.

7. Use keywords.
The search function on CL can be a lifesaver, especially if you know what you're looking for. Use popular words that describe what you're trying to sell. For instance, Anthropologie sells some expensive shiz and I wanted to see if I could score something for a deal. WOW. There's a lot of stuff that is Anthro styled but not necessarily from that store that will show up with that keyword because the seller took the time to put that specific word in their post.

8. Be patient.
If what you're selling doesn't get interest right away it's OKAY. Be patient. Usually the right buyer will come along. If you're tired of waiting, drop the price. If it's still not moving, consider what you're selling. Should you really just donate it?

9. Have low expectations.
You'll get at least 5 emails from people who aren't really interested in your stuff before you find the right buyer. Don't waste your time with people if they're not responsive to your emails or texts.

10. Be safe.
When you do have a potential sale meet the buyer/seller in a public area and bring a friend with you. 99% of the time you'll be fine, but there could be a wack-o out there who you don't want knowing your address. Use the buddy system. :)

BONUS TIP: The best days to post on CL are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Those days typically have the highest traffic. And post in the morning!

Identity Theft Sucks: Protect Yourself, People

review and lifestyle blog scratchnstefIdentity theft sucks. About two years ago, someone in SoCal (that's short for Southern California) bought $190 worth of flowers on 1-800-Flowers.com with MY MONEY. This same individual, or a cohort, then purchased over $400 worth of groceries. I called +JPMorgan Chase and a local credit union to dispute these charges.

lifelock coupon"Um, Hi, I didn't make these purchases. I'm not romantic. Ask my wife. And duh, I'm too poor to shop at Safeway."

The evidence that it wasn't me was overwhelming. An open-and-shut case, right? Not so fast. I had to call the police, file a police report, file separate paperwork for each individual transaction (there were over ten). After nearly $1,000 was stolen from my debit and credit card, I was beyond frustrated. I closed all of my accounts and opened new ones.

Save yourself the headache. #LiveFree. Protect yourself. LifeLock is offering free identity protection for one month. Click here to find out more.

Five Easy Steps to Finding a New Job

review and lifestyle blog scratch 'n' stef @meischase
We've all heard it or said it a million times, "I need a new job." First of all, take a step back and be grateful you're employed. Find the positive in what you do. If it's more money you need, refer to THIS. But if you simply must find something new and you're for real, like really for real, here are the Five Easy Steps to Finding a New Job:

That's it. That's step one. You're done. If you're lucky, a recruiter will contact you and help you through subsequent steps. But that's unlikely, so stay tuned for Step Two.

@meischase scratch 'n' stef2.) Contact a recruiter
3.) Apply to jobs, even jobs you don't want
4.) Interview for anything and everything

The Power of Google: A List of Questions to Never Ask

scratch 'n' stef scratchnstef
Have you ever been Google slapped? The Power of Google can hurt. It's a sharp pain to any ego and a great lesson in humility. I don't like to see people in pain, but sometimes it's for their own good. Close friends will often Google slap each other, but sometimes co-workers and family members are shy to inflict pain. Here's a list of questions you no longer need to ask ANYONE, EVER:

Please STOP annoying your family and co-workers. ALL of these questions can easily be answered through the Power of Google. Yes, it's true, with so many answers available online, why even talk to anyone? Precisely my point.

Beyond simple question answering, Google can provide so much more. More on that another time.
